Sometimes I am so blind. Turns out, that is OK.

A little over 8 weeks ago Keisha and I were given an assignment in our training with Every Village to come up with a strategy to reach out to people. Very soon I felt the Lord leading us to sit with a sign in a public place that said "How may we pray for you" --Simple idea. We had no idea if it was a good strategy or if it works, but we went with it. --
We have been going every Friday at 3pm to Memorial Park with our sign and sitting there waiting. Normally we have one, and only one, person stop for prayer. Last Friday was a little different though and it put the rest of our time in perspective. At first we had some interactions with people that didn’t stop but just answered our sign with fun things like “that I can finish this lap strong”  and “that I don’t pass out” We also had a lady stop and ask for prayer for her father who has cancer. God keeps encouraging us with at least one request each time we go but the Lord really encouraged me on a much deeper level this time. As I sat there and pondered why I was sitting there and about the presence and activity of God. I suddenly knew that it did not matter if people stopped or not. It does not matter if we have spontaneous  relationships with people that do not know Jesus, or if we see people come to trust in Jesus through those relationships. Of course that is our hope and our purpose for being there (as well as to encourage and pray on others behalf hoping God will answer and draw people closer to Himself) but  in the end it does not matter what we saw with our eyes.  It does not matter if we are gratified by a positive result. Could it be that the sign and the weekly presence is making an impact on hundreds of people that I will never see? Is it possible that the Lord regularly answers our prayer... that there is a “distinct feeling of peace and warmth as people pass in front of us”? What is the impact of this momentary event?
As I watched pairs of people look over and start talking about the sign, I don’t know if they are making fun or if they are starting a life altering conversation about their differing beliefs. I am realizing though, that God does what He wants and He is capable of the latter. The most encouraging part though is that results matter a lot less than before. It’s a lot harder to become discouraged knowing that there are unseen things happening below the surface. There is an untold number of small interactions we have throughout our years that are unbeknownst to us, absolutely changing lives. There are moments in our life that we walk away from saying, “I failed” and maybe God has used them more powerfully than the opportunities that we wish we had. I know this, your God is indeed using your life even if you can’t really see how, and one day when all that is sad becomes untrue, and we are at the wedding supper that is promised, there will be some talk of the things that He did, that we were blind to see.

It is not your business to succeed, but to do right; when you have done so, the rest lies with God. -C.S. Lewis

Vision Trip

(Bad punctuation follows)
In March of this year, our team went to visit Nasir, and I had the opportunity to see the place where I would be moving to for the first time. What I saw was not a shock to me, Although the people were even more beautiful than I had imagined. Everything else looked exactly like the pictures.  A dry, desolate land, far away from anything this world would consider as valuable. The heat however, was worse than I could have imagined. It was brutal.

Because of my childhood, I tend to view myself as someone who can take on any challenge, someone who can make the most of an awful situation.  So I felt equipped for anything that might come my way in Nasir. But after 24 hours of being there, as the heat was relentless and I could literally look in certain directions and see absolutely nothing, the reality set in that this was an impossible task. That despite my own strength, despite my history of overcoming so much, that this was too big for me. Discouragement almost overtook me in that moment, but God in a beautiful and tender way, said "It is too big for you. But not for me. Because My power is made perfect in your weakness."  And then I remembered… that little girl, who fought so hard to overcome abuse, didn't do it on her own. It was Christ IN me, the Hope of Glory. It was Him at work in my church, the body of Christ, loving me and supporting me.  How great is our God!

After that tear filled moment where I saw my complete weakness, and I saw the Lords beautiful grace towards me, I was able to see Nasir differently. I had a Hope rising up inside of me. That the power of the living God was here. That he desires the hearts of the people in South Sudan. For years the enemy has had a grip on this place and on these people. And our prayer is that a great awakening will come to South Sudan. And then, that He will restore the years that the locust have eaten.

Upon my return to Houston, I started the difficult logistics of preparing for an overseas move. Letting my sons Blue Ribbon school know that someone else can have his place next year. Putting cheap price tags on pretty much everything in our house as we prepare for a series of garage sales, so that we can take as little with us to Nasir as possible. Adjusting to the pay cut and saying good-bye to dearly loved friends and family. I have often felt that I have to give up so much! And then God shows me the deception in that. The women leaving their homes at 8 at night to pray together on my family’s behalf….A complete stranger, asking the Lord to give her scripture to pray for each individual  on our team…including my kids,  and then giving each of us a token  of her commitment to pray. The costly sacrifice that many of our supporters are surrendering. Bag after bag of clothes for my daughter so that we don’t have to worry about another expense. Surprise phone calls from people in the church who “just want to help”.  I think I’m giving up so much and yet that just isn’t true. I’m gaining more than I ever could have imagined, and I haven’t even left. His power is made perfect in my weakness.  Christ IN me the Hope of Glory. Him at work in the body of Christ!

Praise His name!

If I could end by just blessing you with scripture that the Lord has laid on my heart. Maybe you feel like I did as I looked across that barren land. Maybe you’re facing a seemingly impossible situation:

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may DWELL in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
And because you are sons, God has sent the spirit of His Son into our hearts crying, "Abba, Father!", so you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir through God. Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 10
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" Therefore I will gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, catastrophes, persecutions, and in pressures, because of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Not to us O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness!

Step 2 .......

So I'm in this really weird place. It seems like an unfavorable place, and yet I know against my better judgement, that this is an awesome place to be!

Let me preface this post by saying that, people don't get why we are going to South Sudan. And that's okay.
But I have to make sure you understand this:  I know it will be difficult. It is okay.
I will be on this soap box many times, sharing about the thorns and thistles me or my family are walking through and it is okay! We are expecting them, and we are expecting God to move powerfully through them.

We are going to South Sudan because God is calling us to go there, and so whatever lies ahead, may I be singing when the evening comes. Worshiping the one who made it all!

So Friday (5 days ago), was my last day at work. So a few days later, I feel as though the Lord has picked me up and dropped me into a whole new world. It's called, being a stay at home mom. First of all, that title sounds really relaxing....it's not. Second of all, this has to be my biggest fear in the entire Universe.
Those of you who know me, know that I am not scared by much. I usually charge head first into situations, thinking "I've got this" . Not with this, I will start crying at just the thought of it, because I know I'm not good enough or strong enough to do it, let alone do it well.

And so, here we go. Step one to getting to South Sudan......quit job. Check.
Step two, begin "Stay at home mom" status................................................... I can't do it!!!

This next part is really ugly, It shows the ugliness within my own heart and so I'm pleading with you not to judge me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been surrounded by an environment that rewards hard work. You want something in life, you work hard and you get it. Pretty simple. So I've done that, at work. It's awesome! You work hard and you pretty quickly see the benefit of your efforts. Praise, promotions, etc.
It doesn't work that way for Stay at home moms. My checklists don't get done and I can't seem to keep my house clean. The children don't reward you with compliments when you handled a situation well, or saved money in the budget by not buying something! Honestly, I'm in a little bit of a culture shock.

On top of that, I am impatient and selfish with very little self control. I snap easily at my kids, and so I just can't do it. So how did Monday (my first day) go? Awesome.
Yep, I didn't lose my temper once with the kids. I loved them well. We played together. I wasn't consumed with my own agenda, like I normally am. The problem? It wasn't me. I literally have not been myself this week.Staying at home with my kids (whom I love) is such a tremendously difficult task for me that I have been praying almost all day, every day asking God to help me to be the mom that I can't be on my own. And he has answered my prayers. And why is that so horrible? Because it makes me completely, desperately,  dependent on Him. I've got nothing. I can't do this on my own.
I can only trust Him.

God is asking me to pour out myself into these little ones. And I'm saying, "but God...theres no immediate reward". "Nobodies here watching me anymore and saying 'Well Done'". I'm no longer "Awesome", I'm a doormat.

And yet God in His goodness, takes my ugly, selfishness and says. I'm changing you. No you can't do this on your own. You have to trust me. My Grace is sufficient for you. And Lord it is! Cut out this ugliness, whatever the cost.

I love my children so much, I can't explain it. But I lack so many qualities that "Good Moms" have and so He has to do it! And so when I push people towards discipleship...."Who are you discipling?" I ask...."God commands us to make disciples!",  God has so clearly spoken.
He has given me these blessings, my children, ...to make disciples.

Aiden, Benjamin, Brooke.....I love you so much and I thank God for you! May you be blessed by my imperfections. May you know the depths of my love for you, even when I'm struggling to show it...and even more may you know the depths of love that your perfect father has for you, May you know Him, trust Him and walk with Him, pursue Him,  not by my doing...but by His graciousness in me.

Lord will you give me an obedient heart? Will you give me a servant heart for my kids?
Thank you for taking me to this place, where I am smothered, engulfed with my own sin.
And you lovingly take me by the hand and say, I love you and I will never leave you.

*** For the women who have been walking in this role... I admire you. You are everything I hope to be. I have looked up to you for years, and I am blown away at your sacrifice and the labor that goes into it all! My cousin posted this quote on Facebook yesterday , and I thought it applies well to this subject :-)

"You will come to know that what appears today to be a sacrifice will prove instead to be the greatest investment that you will ever make."- Gordon Hinck

Thank you Father, that you modeled a perfect love, a complete pouring out of yourself by your sacrifice on the cross.

In Jesus name, Amen.

Jesus is so worth it!

Hi I am Jared Pierce I am married to the love of my life Keisha Pierce, we have three kids, Aiden, Ben, and Brooke and God has asked us to move to Nasir, South Sudan!

I have been hesitant to post on our blog, hesitant for two reasons. First off, I feel weird posting on a blog about ourselves. I feel weird  because it seems so presumptuous that people would want to take time to read my thoughts or read a story about us. We are just so common so normal and typical I don't know that any post will excite or inspire. My other source of hesitation is that I am writing to "nobody" ,that I am just wasting my time writing. Then I remember that this journey is not about me or Keisha or the kids, it's not about my ability to entertain or capture readers. This journey of our life is about our Lord, and how HE brings Himself glory through the story that is "our" redeemed story line. So if it is true that I am telling a single small thread of God's story of goodness, one that speaks of His grace, one that is about His steadfast loving kindness then I go from hesitant to overjoyed.

I will start at the beginning as far as I can see is the beginning. Why are we going to South Sudan?? Why not stay here? Why not somewhere else?? About three years ago I felt the start of a deep longing to do something. I had no idea what it was but I wanted to do something. Over time I realized that the something was generally living a life that was a picture of gratitude for what God had done through His son Jesus. He lowered himself, and bore all the shame, agony, and punishment that rightfully belonged to me. He lived a perfect life, perfectly pleasing to the Father and then He handed it over to me. Now I am reconciled, restored, and beloved. There is nothing left that I "need" or "need to do" because He did it all but He put in me this burning desire to do something to express my gratefulness and love. The burning desire turned out to be the easy part. The hard part was.....specifics.....Lord Jesus, what do you want me to do? I want to be where you are and, I want to be part of something that you are in, something you designed for me. If your not in it then what is the point? What is the specific action you want me to take? Should I give more, try to become a pastor, start some ministry? It was these questions that were my heart ache for almost 3 years. We now all know what that specific something was but there was a process that HE took us through that I believe was as much part of the story as what is to come.
Keisha and I were looking for that something everywhere but instead it found us.... Keisha and I were looking for a church that we thought might provide some clue and we went to visit a large church that some friends were going to. The first Sunday they were starting a community outreach and we signed up. The following week we participated and it was enough to get us interested and go back to check out a random Sunday School class.  The place that turned out to be a place of multiple paradigm shifts. There was Peter standing up in front of us praying with a passion and loving Jesus like I had not seen done before. As we sat there being challenged Sunday after Sunday to actually do what Jesus commanded us to do, and expect what we saw in the Bible I felt stirring in my spirit. This guy kept saying “just go love Jesus, go spend time with Jesus” I began to take his advice. What I found was a surprisingly intimate relationship that started transforming me. Fast forward about a year later and Peter says “We are going to South Sudan in October and I want everyone to pray about going. I immediately felt the Lord prodding me to go, but I didn't want to leave my family for two weeks, I don’t’ want to risk my life in some country I have barley heard of. I knew it would cost too much.. What about China..As I prayed about it and I read a blog written by one of the ladies that went on trips with Every Village I began to get excited. I read more about how this lady went because of a book she read and then got there and fell in love with the South Sudanese. I proudly thought to myself “that must be what is going to happen to me” and I will end up there with my family

Instead though I get there and I absolutely love South Sudan and the mud and the huge beautiful smiles the sunrises and the stars and African laughter and people that had hope and faith and not much else but something was missing. I did not feel “called to go” I did not feel the same way as this lady blogger.  I felt only “discouraged” I prayed and prayed and was met with only doubt. I must make a long story short but it was ironic that I was at the time adjusting my worldview to incorporate spiritual warfare because that was what I was right in the middle of and God was allowing me to learn what a battle looked like. I struggled to have the same feelings as I had before the trip and started to think it was all just my big mistake. I started to resign to the apparently inescapable reality that I was supposed to stay in my job and just live out my faith in other ways. Over the next few months I became comfortable with this and the joy started to come back, on most days anyways. It was about that time that the Every Village Gala was happening, I considered not going, but wanted to cheer on the work they were doing so we did.

I sat there in a bit of an awe as I was taken completely by surprise. I began to feel a deep burden for the country and people of South Sudan. I felt the words “Who will go for me” well up from within me I can only describe it as a work of God’s merciful power as I burned inside with each picture and each word. The tears did not come though until Peter read James 4:14. I know that it is not the thrust of the passage but the words “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” echoed in my head. I was not effected they way you might think, instead I felt that God said to me, you belong to me, your life is but a small tiny window of time among billions of loved people, your life is mine, I am responsible for the impact of your life, relax and obey. It was a moment of power that ended a lot of thought patterns that had plagued me. God had been chipping away at them as HE taught me from October to June. Since then, God has sent so much affirmation of that call. Needless to say the bulk of our focus and prayer is now turned toward South Sudan, and going there soon for two years to live with the Nuer people and share the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

I want close by saying, I hope you see this story as God's story. I hope HE receives all the glory. I hope it was obvious that I had very little to do with any of the important parts. I hope you will pray with me as Keisha and I navigate through many challenges that we are now facing and....All praise and glory be to our Lord for this mercy and for all that he will do.

Merry Christmas!

We are completely blown away by all of the generosity that friends and strangers have given this year to help us get to South Sudan! We have a big goal to meet of 60% before January 1 and are trusting the Lord with our jaws dropped as people continue to give so sacrificially.

We are so deeply burdened to get to South Sudan this summer, and are blessed by the support team, God has already put into place.

This verse has been heavy on my heart today, Revelation 7:9 "... a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb..."

What a beautiful picture. These are believers...gathered from all of history, from all parts of the globe, from all people groups  to worship HIM. If this is our finish line, for all believers throughout history, this is the time that will reveal exactly what we exchanged our life for, while we were here on earth.

I am praying for this day. I'm praying that each of us would count the cost of each day until the end. Thinking of the words spoken to my husband as we were called to South Sudan "Who will go for me?" and thinking of our sweet friends who are sacrificing so much to be a part of this call.

Thank you! and of course Merry Christmas!

Rejoice with us!

It has been a fast 60 days!
60 Days ago we had 0 commitments for financial support.
Our November 1st benchmark was that we needed to be 25% funded.
With just a few days to go, the Lord has so graciously provided.
We are actually $21 over our goal! Isn't God good?

Thank you to the many people, who are giving sacrificially and generously to furthering His Kingdom, in something so much bigger than ourselves.

This is it. This is our blog. I have added a few of our journal entries below, and will probably add a few more soon. We don't know what we are doing so definatley send pointers our way.

Below is a list of our prayer requests. We would love for you to send us yours.

1. We are waiting on the 2 additional missionaries to complete our team.

2. That God is preparing the hearts of the South Sudanese in Nasir.

3. That we would continue to meet all of the needed benchmarks, to leave on time: June 2013

Amazing, abundatly blessed, overwhelmed by His power, overwhelmed by your love! Words can't express our feelings. And only in Heaven will we get to see the full impact of your faithfulness.
Blessings to you this day!

He provided redemption for his people;
he ordained his covenant forever—
holy and awesome is his name.

View a Video: Reaching South Sudan

You want me to go where?

I grew up in the US. But I was blessed to be immersed in 2 diverse backgrounds. My moms family is Mexican, Homemade Tamales, rice and beans y yo hablo poquito espanol. I grew up in a Chinese church. Went to Chinese school as a young child and even worshipped for most of my childhood in Chinese.
God has, for a long time, put on my heart evangelism. So in 2010, when we felt God asking us to leave that Chinese church we loved so dearly, we felt it was His calling into Full time Missions. And it was....
But in my limited wisdom, I thought we would go out and find a new church, and the right people and Gods direction and Mission organization would be clear.
After months of searching. We landed at Houston's first in Peter Swanns Sunday school class. To say that I was discouraged was an understatement. I mean in all honesty and transparency, I was disappointed. You see Peters lessons were life changing for me. They were different and challenging. But sitting in a Sunday School classroom at a Mega Church in Houston Texas was not what I had in mind when God laid "Full time missions" on my heart. And Every Village, then Aid Sudan was certainly not the organization God had in mind when he sent us out of our home church.... Besides, at the time, they didn't have full time missionaries there. And even more discouraging... Africa? I speak conversational Spanish! I love Latin and Asian culture, people, food, language. Surely somewhere along the line, we had made a mistake right?
But God is at work, even when we cannot see it... Amen?!
So I completely missed that these last 2 years were preparation for South Sudan. But that's okay right? Had I known we were headed there, i probably wouldn't have had so many children! Mud Hut living with three young children isn't very appealing.
But we don't have to see the big picture, right? In fact we can't see the big picture. He asks us to be faithful with each day. To give each day to him.
Fast Forward 2 years, to Summer 2012. I've given up on overseas missions. I've sort of "settled" that maybe Gods plan is much further out than we could see. And Jared comes to me and says, I feel like God is calling us to South Sudan to live as missionaries. After literally laughing out loud, I told him he was crazy. And he graciously asks, "Honey, will you pray about it?" It was a deer in the Headlights kind of look. "Sure, yeah I'll do that" I said, almost angry with Him. 3 Days later, the Lord had me on my knees in tears, as he confirmed for me that this was His plan. His story.
You see, if this was my story, we would have left for China, or Honduras, 2 years ago.I can literally see myself, opening up the yellow pages searching for Chines Mission Organizations...
And so as we work to fundraise and begin training for South Sudan, 1 important question keeps coming up, "What will you be doing there?"
Great Question. As we pray about our future there, God has made something very clear.
On October 26th, 1 year ago, Jared was on a short term trip to S Sudan. I had no idea that 9 months later God wold call us there. I recently found my notes from a devotional that I read and journaled at that time. I will paraphrase it for you :
A missionary is a person sent by Jesus. Just as Jesus was SENT by God. The controlling factor is not the needs of the people, but the command of Jesus.
There is great danger in missionary work. Gods call may be replaced by the needs of the people...to the point that human sympathy for those needs will overwhelm the meaning of being sent by Jesus. The needs are so enormous and the conditions so difficult that every power of the mind falters and fails. We can easily loose sight of our primary purpose, Matthew 28:19 , Therefore Go, and make disciples of all nations...
In our natural life our ambitions change as we grow. But in the Christian life.... the goal that is given to us at the beginning is the same even to the end. Jesus Christ. We start with Him and we end with Him. But sometimes the enemy will try to distract us. Towards putting our focus on what We think the Christian life should look like. The goal of the missionary, that's you and me, is to do Gods will. Not to be useful, or win the lost. A missionary, that's you and me, WILL be useful and WILL win the lost, but that is not our goal. Our goal is to do the will of our Lord!
So, What will we be doing there? We have training and plans and goals.....but ultimately we will give each day to Him. I can rest in what He has shown me, He is at work even when I can't see it. I can rest in the promises He's given me for this nation.
And I can see that their will be struggles and tears, and even disappointments.... But at the end of the day our goal will be the same... Jesus Christ. And He is worth it!
